UN calls for international assistance as locust plague sweeps through east Africa | Sky News Australia
The United Nations has called for international help to fight huge swarms of locusts sweeping through east Africa.
The UN says Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia are struggling with "unprecedented" and "devastating" swarms of the food-devouring insects.
A small swarm can consume the equivalent of food for 35,000 people in one day.
There are fears locust numbers could grow 500 times by June.
The swarms have spread from Yemen across the Red Sea after heavy rainfall in December created ideal conditions for the insects to flourish.
Locusts have also been breeding in India, Iran and Pakistan.
