Huge fire engulfs Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris
A major fire swept across the top of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral as it was undergoing renovations on April 15, 2019. The 12th-century church, which sits on an island in the River Seine and marks the very centre of Paris, is home to relics, stained glass and incalculable works of art, which was immortalised by Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame.’ The blaze started at 6:50 pm after it was closed to the public, and spread to one of the cathedral’s leading rectangular towers.
